The Federation of Dominican Sisters USA, born May 15, 1999, is the newest step in a dance that dates back to at least 1935. It was in January of that year that twelve Dominican Mothers General gathered for the first time in San Rafael, CA. The purpose of the meeting was: to discuss matters which would make for greater strength, efficiency and unanimity of spirit and action. Commissions were appointed to deal with the following areas: 1) Constitutions; 2) Ceremonials; 3) Religious Habit; 4) Divine Office; and 5) Training of Young Sisters.

Another such conference was held in July of the same year in Norwood, OH. Twenty congregations were represented at that time. These conferences soon became annual events as sisters in Dominican leadership came together to bridge the gap that separated their congregations. After the Second Vatican Council as religious life underwent a major upheaval, the desire and need for more intensive collaboration led to further joint projects such as the Parable Conference for Life and Mission and the Dominican Collaborative Novitiate. In 1992 and again in 1994 New Story New Creation workshops, initiated by the Collaboration Task Force of the Dominican Leadership Conference (DLC) took place in various locations throughout the USA. Literally thousands of Dominicans, especially the sisters, participated in these gatherings and experienced a great deal of energy for forging closer bonds with one another.

After months and years of discussions, committee meetings, surveys, and research, twenty-three Dominican Congregations met at Rosary College May 15, 1999, to sign a covenant to implement the mission of the Federation of Dominican Sisters USA. Later two other congregations joined, bringing the number to twenty-five. Easter Sunday 2009 seven Congregations united to form the Dominican Sisters of Peace. So the total number of congregations represented today is 19. The dance continues as close to 7,000 Dominican Sisters and 2,000 associates throughout the United States come together as local and regional groups to explore the possibilities of their shared future. The Federation has a representative structure of membership and leadership.

In the last 10 years there have been three national convocations: in 2002, 2005 and 2008. Each event drew over 400 participants and generated enthusiasm, creativity and direction for an entity that has begun to take shape. The last convocation was held jointly with the Dominican Associates. The next convocation is scheduled for 2011. Who knows what potential is still in store for us?!
